Tiger's critics way off base

By Barker Davis
April 20, 2006

This computer caddie wants to take a metaphorical 1-iron to the point-missing maniacs who turned Tiger Woods' harmless post-Masters comments into Spazgate.

The non-story began after the final round when Woods, in a rare moment of colorful self-deprecation, explained to a gaggle of media types outside the scoring hut that he had putted like a "spaz" during the finale, his 33 whacks on Augusta National's greens short-circuiting his comeback bid during a closing 70.

Two days later, journalist Lewine Mair of the London Telegraph was accusing Woods of being insensitive to those afflicted with cerebral palsy or the like and claiming American journalists were covering up what she labeled an "extraordinarily insensitive gaffe."

What gaffe? The first definition of "spaz" in Merriam-Webster is "one who is considered clumsy or inept." There is no mention of medical disorders. And to suggest Woods should brush up on his etymologies is outrageous. The word "spaz" is a benign slight in our vernacular, right up there with other oddities of the younger generation like "dweeb," "dork," "nerd" and "geek."

Did you know that a dork is the official name of a whale penis? Probably not, because as Merriam-Webster points out, the word has become synonymous with nerd, a word originally invented by Dr. Seuss in his 1950 tale "If I Ran the Zoo."

What about geek? Did you know that according to Merriam-Webster, the word comes from the Middle Low German "geck," which was a "carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake"? (Neff - ever bite the head off a snake?.....dont answer that!!)

Please, Ozzy Osbourne's no geek; the geek was your elementary school valedictorian. You know, the one who spent six years with his right hand in the air and a smug look on his spectacled face.

The meaning of words changes according to societal usage, and to suggest otherwise is to ignore the reality that the lexicon is established as much by the populace as the literati. To a 30-year-old American like Woods, a "spaz" is someone who is mildly and amusingly clumsy. It's what you might call your little brother's overly excitable best mate, the one who occasionally puts his shoes on backward and can't catch anything -- football, baseball, basketball ... a punch line. It's Chuck Knoblauch throwing to first.

And all semantics aside, Spazgate is a perfect example of how the modern media has verbally neutered professional athletes. The media, this space included, are forever whining about the stream of cliche-riddled tripe that gushes from athletes at all levels. But given the possible ramifications of exposing a personality that strays one degree from the mainstream, any athlete who traffics in anything other than cliches is a fool. And that doesn't mean a jester or court clown from the Middle Ages.

Not a Tiger Woods fan AT ALL, but that was an EXTREMELY absurd story...and then Tiger had to apologize? What cr*p!....is this the kind of sh*t these people find important? Well, this IS coming from the English,...they find the word "Spaz" insulting, yet walk "about" with rotting teeth in their heads', and that's just fine? talk about insensitive!

Also, since when has it been insulting to be compared to the World's #1 ranked golfer, who "spaz"ed his way to a top 5 finish at the Masters?
I'd think most Brits, stricken with severe halitosis (due to "spotting" up vinegar on their dreadful fish, no doubt), would spend more time looking for a dentist, than recording (verbatim) ANYthing Tiger Woods says in his post-Tourney interview.
Did the "impaired" go into a riot over this?...I mean, look around, it is the NORM these days. Anytime something, ANYthing!... regardless of its intention, magnitude or relevance, can be deemed insulting- it requires ANYone with even a remote connection to the subject matter RAGE ON and burn, destroy and loot!....
So, BE WARNED TIGER!.....my uncle was a golf ball.....and when you hit them, then smile as you walk down the fairway, YOU ARE INSULTING MY UNCLE!!!!, therefore my family, heritage, home town, and race!.....You should pay me some $ to help me get over the emotional drain you cause me!......dang Tiger Woods!

....and the Media wonders why Pro Athletes don't like to talk them.Is there that little to write about, that they have to reach for a story!!??
Everybody was a spaz in Elementary School...then in Junior High....then some of High School.Later in High School they became F!@$*#% when that was cool.
The Real story should be that he's such a Geek, he still says "Spaz"....oh how 80's!! I bet he has MC Hammer in the CD player right now.

....or at least he shouldn't be allowed!...The only golfer that was permitted to dance, was/is Chi Chi Rodriguez '!....and he threw in the sword-putter routine too...Tiger already HAS an annoying little "thingy" he does (which I lovingly refer to as his "As*man yell"), and he's not allowed to have two!

But!, he MAY just "sing" a little Hammer,....when his ultra hot Scando-wife is around the pool in her nothing-ini...."Can't touch this!"....ok, that was obvious, but this thread was going that way!....

btw, I have an old "risqué" pictorial ALLEGEDLY featuring a younger Miss Woods...but that's not permissible here...Neither is even mentioning that it exists, that I have it, or that I've even seen it!...AND, even if it DOES exist, and its NOT her, or its her and it doesn't exist, OR.---?...wait, I'm lost now...???...anyway, the blonde displayed and promoted AS her, is quite fetching,....yet still,..I...."Can't touch this!"...but who wouldn't like to "hammer "...OK, I'll stop.

Being overly politically correct isn't a virtue. That movement, like many such movements, was begun as a way to combat conformity and conventional wisdom. When the movement swallows itself and begins to forbid anything but conformity, it has outlived its usefulness.
