The USSSA removed most of its eligibility restrictions pertaining to mixed couples teams from its National By-Laws for 2007. Unless a team is reclassified by the National By-Laws based on its performance in 2006, it is now the responsibility of each State Director to classify mixed couples teams based on their overall strength. No longer are teams classified nationally based on what classification level the male and female players participate in with their respective men’s and women’s teams. The only By-Law relating to this now is a prohibition of male players who are either on the Major Player List or who have competed during the current season with Men’s A teams; these players may not compete with a USSSA mixed couples Class C or D team.
Mixed teams are not to interpret this as a signal that they can add any player they wish to their roster. State Directors are still ultimately responsible for classifying each team based on the strength of its roster, and all teams should contact their respective State Director to review their roster and obtain a classification for 2007.
For 2007, the State Directors in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana have agreed to continue to use the 2006 USSSA National eligibility By-Laws pertaining to the mixed program, as specified below, with one exception, as follows: Mixed C and D teams may add one Men’s B player for 2007. However, State Directors still reserve the right to classify a team at a higher level REGARDLESS of what classification the players may compete in with their respective men’s and women’s teams. E. g. a team with no male B players could still be classified Mixed A or B. Or a team with no male C players could be classified Mixed A, B or C. But Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana policy for 2007 is that any team with more than one male B player will automatically be classified as Mixed B or higher.
There is going to be confusion with the new USSSA National By-Laws and Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana policies, and we ask for your patience and understanding during this transitional year. We urge tournament operators to offer Mixed B-C divisions in the event a team is not aware of the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana policy, so that teams that may inadvertently be in violation can participate without risk of being put out of the tournament for a violation. We also urge tournament operators to explain this rule when they accept teams into their events, or to refer them to their respective State Directors.
