FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Combat’s Lady Virus VIRSP3 Bat Added to ASA’s Non Approved List

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, Monday, January 7 2008 — The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA), the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, today announced that the softball bat model VIRSP3 Lady Virus manufactured by the CE Composites, Inc. (DBA Combat) is no longer authorized for use in ASA Championship Play.

Other governing bodies that currently use ASA’s bat performance standards such as the NCAA, NFHS, NAIA, NJCAA will continue to use the ASA’s non approved bat list and restrict such bats in 2008 and beyond.

“We are disappointed with the situation but understand that our contract with the ASA requires a bat to be placed on the ASA Non Approved list after it fails consecutive compliance tests”, said Steven Sutherland, President of CE Composites. “We acknowledge full responsibility for this situation. Please visit our website, www.combatsoftball.com, to learn more about our efforts to deal with this situation.”

ASA conducts random audit testing of various approved models throughout each calendar year to verify that the manufacturers’ bat models comply with the standards currently in effect. It was through this auditing process, that it was discovered that the VIRSP3 Lady Virus failed to comply with the ASA Bat Performance Standard.
The ASA will continue to audit bats on an on-going basis to verify compliance.

In order to gain initial certification and have the right to use the ASA 2004 bat certification mark, bat manufacturers send production samples to independent ASA approved testing labs. Once the sample bat passes the performance test at one of the independent labs, the manufacturer has the authority to apply the ASA 2004 bat certification mark indicating compliance with the current standard. It is the responsibility of the bat manufacturer to ensure that every unit of each model produced passes the test at any point during the lifespan of the bat.

About the ASA
The Amateur Softball Association of America, a volunteer driven, not-for-profit organization based in Oklahoma City, OK, is the national governing body of softball in the United States. Founded in 1933, the ASA regulates competition in every state through a network of 83 local associations to insure fairness and equal opportunity to the millions of players who annually play the sport. Additional information about the ASA and its Bat Testing and Certification Program can be found by visiting www.asasoftball.com

pretty sure he was talking about the LV. He was on my team, and although we saw plenty of Wegman bombs, we only saw a few wegmanish bombs that weren't actual Wegman bombs, and they pretty much all came from the LV.

For everyone holding on to their LV's for Utrip, don't worry about it anymore. The Lady has been recalled by Combat and Combat has requested that they are banned from every association. The bat has already been removed from USSSA's approved bat list.

So... for the people trading in their LV's now, what is the best Combat bat for USSSA and/or ASA?

so what makes a "women's" bat different from a "men's" bat. Anyone care to explain?

It was an f'n marketing campaign. nothing more, nothing less.

To start with...the length and weight. Why would you want to swing a 33", 25oz bat that is made for women? That's more than just marketing. Don't tell me "bat control" either. If you can't control a 34", 26oz bat then this isn't going to help you either. I keep reading how "hot" this bat is, but the lighter the bat, the less power anyway...it's basic physics. More mass into the object you're hitting, the harder and farther it will go...it's not all about bat speed...if it was, then why not swing a wiffle ball bat...you can swing that 200mph, but the ball won't go anywhere.

I don't care if it makes me hit the ball 600ft.....If it is pink, 33 inches, 25 ounces, and says LADY on it.... I am not swinging it. Sorry.

well, it's not the first 33" bat. Some of the ESTs used to come in 33, and they never said anything about women's or lady's on them... The LV was also sold in a 27, which is as light a bat as I will swing, but pretty much every "men's" bat on the planet is available in a 27, so it's tough to say too much about that unless you are swinging a clincher or something along those lines.

What it all boils down to is marketing. It's no different than any other bat, except it was marketed to women. That and Combat tried to work the system and failed.

I guess since people are willing to question someone's manhood for swinging a bat that says "lady" on it, we should also question everyone's wives/girlfriends that wear men's turfs and swing men's bats. They must all be lesbians.

Come on....it says LADY VIRUS right on it!!

Thats like saying what makes womens clothes different from mens...do you find it alright to wear hip hugger jeans, tight belly shirts & push-up bra's?

that's the point. you are talking about things that are manufactured differently specifically for women. Women's close are cut differently, designed differently, etc. etc. Other than the fact that it was illegal, the LV was manufactured just the same as other "more masculine" bats. It's like saying the Miken Decoy is only for rednecks. maybe it is, but under the nifty paint job it's no different than any other bat.

Isnt it a fast pitch bat?

it's one bat model that is (was) listed as both a fast pitch bat AND a slowpitch bat.

Pretty much irrelevant as fastpitch isn't gender specific, just like slow pitch isn't.

If you are going to make these gender arguments, maybe you should look at the bigger picture and consider that we are ALL a bunch of grown men playing a women's sport. Does it really matter if the bat we swing is gender specific?
