View Full Version : The Question That Needs to be Asked....

After year after year after year of poor weather for the Bash, isn't it time the date of tournament is reconsidered??? I guess I just have a problem with any "big" or "meaningful" tournament being played before April or May. It's one thing to "get some swings in" during a round robin, qualifier, etc. But a big money tourney or NIT this early just seems silly. And here are some reasons why...

1. What does it prove? Does a tourney played in 30 degree weather and mushy fields TRULY prove who the best teams are???? Absolutely not. Throw power and athleticism out the door. You might as well drink a keg of beer and play tittlywinks in the bar area to determine the winner.... Wait, some teams might actually take me up on that suggestion... I digress....

2. The risk AND timing of injuries. The likelyhood of injuries is amplified umteen times with the miserable weather conditions. And not only do you lose players, but you lose them at the very beginning of the season. Some injuries incurred at this tournament will linger for the remainder of the year.... It's hard enough on some of those old bones going out to play for the first time of the year. Then you add in terrible weather, and you're just asking for trouble.

3. Money. Due to the money involved, the tourney holds the "we'll play in any conditions" mentality. Maybe it's just me, but playing in severely low temps and standing water just isn't my idea of fun. And in the end, isn't that what this is really about??? Not to mention the risk of injury noted above... There is NO other tournament short of state, nationals, and world that would play next weekend in the current conditions.... It still supposed to flurry Sunday and Monday, so the fields will start to thaw on Tuesday at the earliest.

4. The ability to schedule later in the year. Why can't this tourney be played later in the year? YES, some weekends will conflict with other big tourneys, NIT's, etc. But CERTAINLY there is a weekend available that would work. The Bash has created such a great reputation that certainly out of town teams would still travel and local teams would still participate if the tourney was played later in the year. In fact, I actually think MORE teams would play in the Bash if it was played in May or June.

I love softball as much as the next guy, but even the most die-hard softball player has to admit that playing next weekend will just be silly. Even IF the temps rise into the 40s or low 50s, the fields will be complete slop. Just not seeing the fun in that....

Great point, call me sometime and we can discuss it. But I will tell you right now if my fields are complete slop next weekend, I owe you a Beer/Pepsi what ever your choice of beverage is and some wings. I can't speak for other parks but I may not have ideal conditions next weekend but it will be far from playing in slop.

Please don't take my post as a knock on your ability to maintain your fields. I apologize if I came off that way. I've played at Riverstar many a time in my days, and I can vouch for your ability to maintain solid playing conditions. Great ballpark. Huddy, where my C NIT portion will be played.... Well, I unfortunately can't say the same. But again, I digress....

I guess the fact that you will have to waste who knows how much money and time to make the fields playable only further emphasizes my question. If the tourney was played later, just think of the money and time that could be saved on your end in better conditions. It just seems like the timing of the tourney is a lose-lose for the players and the park. Maybe I'll just take you up on that conversation. :) I wish you the best as far as weather to make this week as easy as possible on you.

In my opinion, this tournament is the best tournament until worlds. Everyone is itching to get out and play and there would not be the tournout of teams if you held this tournament in May. Teams come down because there is nowhere else to play at this time. I have been going down since 2004 and I have had a great time everytime. I don't think that the fields have really been that horrible.

Bill does a great job and runs a great tournament. He also provides great entertainment Friday night and I know many appreciate what he does and most enjoy this tournament the weekend that it is held.

I think the 200+ entrants prove that there are a couple of people that disagree with you and just want to get out and play after the long winter.

Will agree w/Smashmouth. Although if the tourney was ran later cause of better weather he will not have near as many teams come out. I would say about 1/2. And if he happens to get rain that weekend then it's a complete loss. Remember all these parks will have a bunch of other stuff going on throughout the year. And teams won't be near as eager to come out to play in this type if it was held later. Maybe just maybe a week later but then again we could be in the same situtation we are in now. Cause if I remember right there isn't any N.I.T's ran the week after the Bash, but there is 2 weeks after it.
Bill is the man, he just needs Huddy to step up big this year and I'm sure they'll be up to the task this year seeing that this will be one of the biggest tournies they have ever held (being this is the "C" N.I.T). G/L to everyone and hope to see everyone leave safe and injury free.

I never said it was a bad tournament.... I simply believe it could be even bigger and better if pushed back a few weeks. Of course people will disagree with me! I'm just stating my opinion.... There will be 65,000 people at Paul Brown Stadium for Bengals games whether it's -5 and snowing or 73 and sunny. Just because they're there on the -5 day doesn't mean they wouldn't PREFER the 73 day....

I think a lot of teams actually LIKE the tourney in it's current date slot for one of the reasons I mentioned. You don't have to be one of the most talented teams to have success because of the great neutralizer known as mother nature.... The conditions really level the playing field.

Who knows? Maybe I'm just getting picky in my old age. My experience with the game tells me that I'd rather see my team stay healthy early rather than just get out there and play as soon as the temps break 20 degrees.

well if it was any later we wouldnt be able to come to the tourney.. we have 3-4 early birds in our area and we hit them all every year.. being this early in the year makes it easy for us to get in the tourney... so i hope the date doesn't change and with 200+ teams in the tourney i guess they don't mind either. I'd bet if the date got pushed back the number of teams would drop alot and Major HR Exhibition wouldn't get all the big names it has this year...

not to be a post whore but i think if it was played a couple weeks later it would be just another NIT and theres no way teams would drive 5-6-7-8 hours to play a NIT when they can play them in their backyard... Last years Bash was my favorite tournament of the year and i was at WSL and USSSA Worlds. It's not broke so don't fix it...

come on now...it's not "the bash for the cash" unless it's 25 degrees out! makes for some good war stories in july :) you can always play in 80's-90's, but 20's and 30's is a fun experience...

it's not fun playing in 20-30 degree weather... it is, however, the fastest working remedy for treating cabin fever

While it would be nice to get a couple tournaments in before the Bash, at least it being one of the first big tournaments of the year gives you something to look forward to rather than looking forward to round robins & qualifiers until July or August.

Why change?? Where else can you get frozen toes, pulled hammies/quads, a .400 batting average is "ok," snow flurries, and hand stingers?? Look at the bright side though thebeer will stay cold.

I agree that the fields may be pretty messy but, year after year around 200 teams sign up to play. And i am sure they all know what the conditions could be like. I guess they are all devoted to the game you could say. I can speak for my team and say that we hate playing in those conditions but, the parks do work their butts off to get it ready to be playable. Even if they are not what to be expected. The parks have my thumbs up for the effort. Although pussing it back is an option.
