here's one that happened in my kids game yesterday (A ball):

bases loaded, 2 outs. Batter hits a flair into right field that drops in for what looks like a single. Runner going between 1st & 2nd holds for a second & then takes off. The right fielder throws a seed to 2nd for the force out to end the inning. The umpire yells "out at 2nd, the run counts".

I had my opinion & the rest of park had another opinion as to whether or not this call was correct. Anyone care to chime in.............

the run does not count. In order for the run to count, the batter has to reach base safely. In this case, the batter hit into a, sort-of, fielder's choice. I am not 100% on this, but I would have to argue that one with you.

I always was told that no matter what, the run does not count when the last out is produced by a force out. A very similar situation occured in a league nite game about 3wks ago, and I was informed by a "squirely" little umpire that this is not always the case. So to answer your question..........I have no idea now. lol I am interested to know the answer though.

You should be 100% on this because your correct. Force play, run doesn't count.

no run, just like hitting a ground ball to shortstop and flipping it to second....if the final out of the inning is a force the run doesn't count.....does this guy to softball too, i think i may know him....LOL

I have a question.. Why with 2 out didn't the kid run anyways? Why did he stop to see if it dropped?

For the answer.. The run doesn't count just like a double play. If it is a force out to end the inning the run doesn't count. Doesn't matter if its a seed and the Fat slow guy gets thrown out as a force at second. Run still doesn't score..

not always true...

take runners on 2nd and 3rd... one out.. batter hits a sac fly for out two... runner on 3rd tags and scores. runner on second leaves early... defense appeals the runner at second... runner is called out... but the run still scores.

In this case however unless there is something I am missing, the run should not score... that's why they always say make sure you touch the next base on a game ending hit....

[QUOTE=slamit93;50830]take runners on 2nd and 3rd[QUOTE]

That quote right there eliminates a force play. The runners tag at their own accord when the ball is caught.

so it isn't a force play at second if he doesn't tag?

When the ball becomes a live ball he is not required to run because there is no one on first forcing him to run. He can stay at second as long as he wants. He is technically out on a force play at second but it's not a force out.

And you don't have to touch second to make the out, you can just tag the runner.

It is a force at 2nd. The run does not count. The umpire was 100 % correct. Which would leave me to believe that this game was not played at Rumpke Park. I know you said it was a baseball game ... just could not pass up the shot at Rumpke. Yes even after all these years the "Rumpke Experience" still burns my crawl !!

You might need to re-read the OG post. Ump counted the run.

the run doesn't count in this situation either. it's still a force out....leaving early is the same as not tagging up at all.....so in this situation it's a double play inning over and the run doesn't count!

There was a similar play at my daughter's softball game last night. In her first at bat, Sami smoked the leftfielder...........and everyone was safe. O.K., it wasn't similar. I just wanted everyone to know that Slamin' Sami smoked the leftfielder.......who was every bit of 7 years old.....and talking trash. I kept my mouth shut, because she was pretty big for a 7 year old...

28SS....how old was the umpire? Wait! It doesnt matter! Someone, probably you, should have smacked this douchebag in the back of the head. I dont care if the ball was hit into another county. If it is, and the kid running from 1st to 2nd breaks his leg, breakdances, or does the worm to 2nd base, he is still out if the ball beats him to 2nd, ie force out. In this case, although the Worm to 2nd base would be cool to watch, the run does NOT count because of that 'not so common baseball term' force out. Did I say that the umpire in this case was a complete douche nugget?
